New Coordination Office: CIOOS Strengthens Its National Structure

MAY 24, 2025

The Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System (CIOOS) is taking a major step forward in its development with the launch of a new national Coordination Office.

This new office, supported by renewed funding from Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and MEOPAR, will play a central role in supporting the strategic and operational coordination among the three CIOOS Regional Associations: CIOOS Atlantic, the St. Lawrence Global Observatory (SLGO), and CIOOS Pacific.

CIOOS team meeting with representatives from the three Regional Associations (CIOOS Pacific, St. Lawrence Global Observatory and CIOOS Atlantic) as well as the Coordination Office, in Halifax, March 2025.

The CIOOS Coordination Office is hosted by MEOPAR (the Marine Environmental Observation, Prediction and Response Network), providing a strong institutional foundation and benefiting from MEOPAR’s experience in ocean science coordination and national partnership building.

The Coordination Office will play a key role in:

  • Ensuring national coherence in priorities and operations,
  • Collaborating with the regions to streamline processes and support the development of shared cyberinfrastructure and tools,
  • Representing CIOOS at the national and international levels,
  • Strengthening collaboration and shared governance within the network,
  • Developing new partnerships and ensuring funding diversification.

Team Announcement

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Anne-Sophie Ste-Marie as Director of the CIOOS Coordination Office, who officially began her role last May 5th. Ms. Ste-Marie previously worked for over eight years at SLGO, where she played a key role in many of CIOOS’s national initiatives since its inception in 2018, including the Executive Committee and the Communications Committee.

She brings to the role a deep knowledge of the CIOOS ecosystem, strong experience in strategic planning and partnership development, and a deep commitment to the mission of CIOOS, its regions, and its partners.

The team will continue to grow in the coming months, with the addition of new technical positions. With the establishment of this new team, CIOOS is reinforcing a more robust, collaborative, and agile structure to meet the challenges of delivering ocean observation data across Canada.
